GENERAL HEALTH AND SAFETY MANUAL (3RD EDITION)

Definitions

For the purpose of this manual:

• Staff means all persons employed by the University and whilst at work.
• Students means all persons (not being members of staff) who are pursuing a course of study or research approved by the University.
• Visitors means people who are visiting the University on a temporary basis, either for work, social , or other reasons.
• Safety means occupational safety in general. Personal safety and the safekeeping of personal effects would mainly be the prerogative of the Security (and Emergency) Service.
• Health means occupational health, in contrast to externally acquired illness or disease which may be of interest to the Personnel Department or the University Medical Officers.

Note

Wherever possible in this Manual language that is gender-free has been used. However, in the case of direct quotations from statutory instruments this is not possible because they are normally couched in masculine terms but are intended to encompass all people.
